Sourcing from India

India

Traditionally India has always been known as a sourcing hub for spices, textiles, apparel, jewelry, handicraft and medicines.

However, post 1991 liberalisation there has been a major paradigm shift in the way product manufacturing is looked upon in India. The sectors which have shown promise and have grown significantly include Automobile, Electronics, Medicines & Medical Equipment and Space Tech.

Ford, Suzuki & Hyundai are manufacturing and as well as exporting cars made in India. Two major brands Apple and Samsung have massive production facilities both for the country and exports. A significant volume of generic drugs is being exported to US produced under FDA approved manufacturing units. Launching commercial satellites and development of satellites jointly with different countries.

Indian companies export billions of dollars each in categories as diverse as: furniture, medical and surgical instruments, electrical machinery, ships and boats, vehicles, boilers, parts made of plastic, steel and Aluminium, organic and inorganic chemicals and many more products.

Even from the IPR protection point of view India allows 100% FDI in most of the sectors and there is no risk involved. The various advantages dealing with India includes a large base of English-speaking professionals. Local presence of internally accredited QA inspection agencies and services for conducting pre and post product / facility inspections.

In terms of the exposure the Indian business community / professionals are well versed to with the international culture / trends thus take their responsibilities more seriously be it quality / product design / delivery. Also, the business development is done with a long-term approach rather than a quick fix short term solution immediate sale.

There are challenges of sourcing from India which includes labour intensive manufacturing & lack of atomisation, complex logistics and longer shipping times in comparison to China, lack of reliable supplier directories, presence of scrupulous suppliers and quality compromises.

However, all the manufacturing related issues are more due to the volume being produced and medium / small businesses are more dependent to grow with the volumes rather than going into a pre-expansion mode.

Logistics and it’s cost both are two key concern area as the it have a direct impacts on the costing and decision making of the business. Also, the operations at port which are under government control and operated under labour unions get complicated at times.

India being a large country with more than 65 percent population under 35 years of age is a significant market, hence many manufacturing companies were happy servicing the domestic needs.

Now with the export impetus of the government leading to fast paced improvement in the infrastructure like port facilities, dedicated goods trains connecting dry ports, quick custom clearance etc the same set of entrepreneurs have started gearing up to satisfy the global requirements.
